New Orleans! What a place. If we had to pick a city we liked the best on this trip, it would have to be this one. There is such liveliness and pizzazz here. We spent 4 nights there and saw so much. We especially liked the street nightlife, but not that which New Orleans is famous for, Bourbon Street (the main strip of club & bar & takeaway Daquiris) but Frenchmen Street! We found a super fun bar with live music and we stayed there the whole night. They had a large group of musicians on stage and we found out later that it was kind of like an “open stage” night where people could come with their instruments and join the group on stage.
In addition to the bar scene, there was a lot of outside entertainment as well. We walked past this group of dudes playing on a street corner many times. They were out there for hours, playing for the tourists walking by and slowing traffic. They were also very talented! Check it out…
We tried to go into a few museums but due to Thanksgiving week, we assume, everything was closed. We did make it to the Pharmacy Museum, which was surprisingly quite cool! Here was where the first licensed pharmacist in the USA worked. It has been turned into a museum with different tools on display on the ground floor and upstairs where the first licensed pharmacist and his family lived in the early 1800’s.
We felt like exploring the nature one day, so we went to a park called Audubon Park and there was a super huge tree there that they say is probably from the mid-1700’s. On our walk around, we discovered some horse stables called Cascade Stables, and we explored inside there a bit. We found out that the horses are mostly kind of “rescue” horses and are available for adoption after being taken from bad situations where they were abused. This was a lovely place and the hoses seemed very well taken care of. Apparently this is also where the Mardi Gras horses are stabled while they are in town for the festivities.
We both loved the houses in New Orleans and all the colors and variations of styles we saw as we were walking around the streets.
Food!
We had so much good food in New Orleans!! First place worth mentioning was called Coop’s place where I had some fried chicken and Johannes had the Jambalaya. This was excellent! Kind of had a sports bar vibe.
One day, we were on the hunt for a specific place that we heard about on that show I keep mentioning Ugly Delicious (if you haven’t seen it, GO NOW) and it was already late, so we were both feeling quite hangry and then when we finally found it, it was CLOSED!! grrrrrrrrr
On our drive, we passed a semi-sketchy looking place called just simply Cajun Seafood, so in our current state of extreme hunger, we decided to go back to that and see what they have. We both got sandwiches and liked them so much, we went back there the next day for lunch! But the second time, we decided we were gonna go for the cajun seafood because we figured this must be their specialty… I never knew I could love these little cockroaches of the sea SO MUCH but I did! We both did!
And on our very last night, we went to a BBQ place called The Joint, which was conveniently within walking distance to our Airbnb. I would dare to say this was the BEST all around BBQ we had on our entire road trip. The sauce selection was great, although we barely needed sauces because the meat was super tender and flavorful on its own. The mac n cheese was the perfect balance of stringy and creamy and the noodles were perfect. I apologize for the blurry picture below, but we were so excited to eat it when the food came, that care was not taken!
The next morning, we woke up at 5am to make the 7 hours drive back to Gainesville for Thanksgiving dinner. That concludes our road trip! Next post will be the last about USA travels, and then the SE Asia posts will begin!! Stay tunedddddddddddddddd
